A Newbie Vibram Five Fingers Runner Here

by Administrator | post a comment

Today I had a bit of a breakthrough though - I went out with my hubby and the dog and I wore my Vibram fivefingers kso trek for the first time! Had a pair of socks on which I'd bought from Running Fitness Magazine so was quite warm and they felt fine. Did some walking to begin with and then tested out how it felt to run in them.. All felt well - in fact it felt better to go a bit faster than it did to try slowly jogging?

My second breakthrough was that we were due to have lunch with my Mom today too and I really wanted to keep wearing Vibram five fingers. So I dressed up smart just so's I could wear my black and red sprints! Hubby thought my Mom would have something to say about that, but she didn't notice until after the lunch and then said "they're funny Vibram kso trek shoes you're wearing?!".....yeah, I told her, they're exercise shoes and I'm getting used to them - next best thing to being barefoot - "yes, dear" was her look and she just carried on talking about something else?

My dilemma now is that having had 3 weeks off, do I return to running in my New Balance 790s or continue with my Five finger shoes? I guess the BIG question is, should I at all contemplate running in Vibram fivefingers for my marathon in April? If that would be too soon for that distance, then I guess I should continue wearing them alternatively with the NB790s, although I get the feeling from what I'm reading in these posts that it can actually be detrimental to "go back" to running in normal shoes.

I have to say, I hadn't appreciated that I'd suffer in any way with sore heels/ankles/calves and it came as a bit of a shock that I did. However, having followed advice here, I'm doing strengthening exercises, using a ball to roll under my feet, icing etc, so feeling much better about progressing with my quest to become a Vibram fivefingers running shoes runner!
